Brihadeeswarar Temple
Brihadeeswarar Temple built in the year 1010 CE by Raja Raja Chola in Thanjavur,
Tamil Nadu, India, the temple is popularly
Known as the Big Temple. The temple is made without any foundation, The temple now stands amidst fortified walls that were added after the 16th century.
Built out of granite, the vimana tower above the shrine is one of the tallest in South India. The temple has massive colonnaded
prakara (corridor) and one of the largest Shiva Lingas in India. The complex includes Shrines for Nandi,Parvati,Kartikeya,Ganesha, Sabhapati, Dakshinamurti, Chandeshvara, Varahi and others. The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu. It turned 1000years old in September 2010. To celebrate the 1000th year of the grand structure, the state government and the town held many cultural events. And in September 2021 it turned 1011 years old.
Specialties
The temple has the world's tallest vimanam
(tempel tower) and it's Kumbam (the structure on the top) weighs approximately
80 tons. The temple is the first complete
granite temple in the world. Around 60,000
tons of granite is said to be used to build the temple.
In the temple there are several underground
passages which connected the different temples of Chola period. In addition to that
there are secret passages within the temple which connected all the secret places of the kings. Many of them have been sealed.
This imposing structure was built by Raja Raja Cholan and his sister Kundavai, both
ardent devotees of Lord Shiva. It was constructed by the King at the height of Chola reign to signify his Power and Strength.
